7 foods and drinks surprisingly high in sugar

Here at Dr. Karen J Lee dentistry, even though we can easily fix any cavities, stains, or teeth issues you may have, it's better (and cheaper!) to prevent these problems in the first place with proper brushing techniques, flossing, and most importantly, eating healthy. Believe it or not, the food we consume has a big impact on the health and general well being of our teeth. This guide helps explain a list of foods to watch out for, as well as some helpful alternatives.

Yogurt:  Did you know that flavored yogurts can sometimes contain as much as 20 grams or more of sugar! This of course, in combination with poor dental health maintenance, can lead to cavities and decay of otherwise healthy teeth. You are better off eating unflavored yogurt that has at most 7 grams of sugar and adding your own fruit, such as bananas and blueberries.

Tomato Sauce: Tomato sauce certainly provides health benefits, but were you aware that a third of an average-sized jar can contain over 13g of sugar. Also, due to the fact that most people have tomato sauce with pasta, which is a high carb source, can lead to a spike, thus sending your sugar levels into overload. Sugar is often added to make the sauce taste less acidic, so making your own sauce at home is your best bet.

Salad Dressing: When it comes to adding dressing to your salads, sometimes the more simple - the better. Even healthier choices such as balsamic vinaigrettes are filled with sugar, and fat-free versions are the worst. During the process of removing the fat from foods, sugar is often used as a replacement to maintain the flavor, so next time try mixing olive oil and vinegar with your leafy greens to give it more flavor without sacrificing your teeth.

Red Apples: Although they provide a great source of fiber, red apples can contain as much as 20 grams of sugar per apple. A healthier alternative is Granny Smith apples which have just as much healthy fibre but much less sugar content. Dried fruits should generally also be avoided, since they contain the same amount of sugar as fresh fruits, but are less filling due to the lack of water content. Less filling leads to more eating which means a higher sugar intake.

Granola bars: Most granola bars contains 30 to 40% of your recommended daily sugar intake. Sugar is often one of the top ingredients in granola bars and nutritionally speaking, most are quite similar to candy bars. If you need a quick snack, nuts or seeds provide extra protein and are a much healthier alternative.

Cranberry juice: While cranberry juice has many health benefits, it too is loaded with sugar. There are 35 grams of sugar in an 8 ounce glass of 100% cranberry juice. Try taking cranberry pills instead which offer the same healthy perks without the high sugar content.

Milk: Milk may be a good source of calcium, but it also has a lot of sugar—as much as 12 grams of sugar are in a cup of whole or fat free milk. The good news is there are many alternatives to getting your calcium intake, such as soy or almond milk. Even better, unsweetened soy milk only contains about 1 gram of sugar per cup.
